Understanding Face Masks Usage

Face masks are an important part of natural beauty. Whether one wants to get rid of wrinkles, acne or just dirt and grime, face masks can be used for full-face coverage or specific areas of the face. A popular type of face mask is the daily facial mask. Some people like to use them every day while others prefer to use them periodically throughout the week as a way to rejuvenate and restore the skin’s appearance.

A cloth face mask, also known as a dust mask, is typically a thin layer of fabric, most often cotton, worn around the nose and mouth. While effective at keeping allergens from entering the lungs and respiratory system, which can be important for individuals suffering from allergies or asthma, this type of facial covering is not 100% dust proof. When physical distancing is impossible and when other more efficient face masks are simply unavailable, cloth face masks can be a practical alternative to allergy sufferers.

There are many advantages to using cloth face masks. The biggest advantage is that they leave little to the imagination as far as cleanliness is concerned. Once the mask is removed, the skin is immediately clean and fresh. A cotton mask can be washed according to the directions on the container, while others require that the skin is prepped before washing. For best results, freshly laundered or freshly scrubbed face masks should be used.

As opposed to using disposable plastic handpieces, some cloth face coverings are made with porous materials that allow air exchange between the face and the airflow. This allows air to ventilate the area and remove any particles, infectious organisms or bacteria that might be breathed in. Examples include plastic microbeads used in wands and various types of filters used in most HEPA air purifiers. These types of respirators allow particles, such as dust, to pass through while still maintaining a level of purity. Respirators are also designed to keep contaminants from entering the nose and throat area and clogging air pathways. A significant disadvantage of these types of face masks is that they do not provide complete protection from respiratory infections and diseases like asthma and rhinitis.

When compared to disposable plastic handpieces and surgical masks that contain various types of chemical agents, face masks with pore-clogging materials are more effective. A few researchers even believe that face masks containing this ingredient are as effective as HEPA filters and other technologies in removing allergens, bacteria and viruses. Studies on the efficacy of face masks have been published in scientific journals and medical journals.

Health care providers commonly advise individuals to wear face masks when caring for their pets. A common misconception about the practice is that it somehow restricts airflow into the lungs and mouth. This can lead to serious respiratory problems and infections. However, if a professional can demonstrate that using a face mask effectively limits the spread of allergens and other harmful contaminants, the use of a face mask may be recommended.
